HEART-LEAFED GOLDEN ALEXANDER

Botanical Name:  Zizia aptera
Plant Family: Carrot (Apiaceae)

Description: Short-lived perennial with dark green, heart-shaped basal leaves. Stem leaves are divided into three leaflets.Tiny bright-yellow flowers in flat-topped clusters, 2-3" wide, on branched 1-3' stems.

Growing Conditions: Full sun to part shade.  Moist prairies and open woods.

Bloom Time: Early, Apr - May
Bloom Color: Yellow

Benefit to pollinators/wildlife: Attracts large numbers of native bees and insect that prey on or parasitize pests. Black swallowtail butterfly caterpillars feed on this and other members of the carrot family.

Native Status: US native, PA native

Location in habitat: Native Bee Conservation Garden
